The story is about the stereotype conflict between the poor/narrator family but strong, healthy and contented and the rich family who has everything but their children is thin and sickly. The rich man accused the poor/narrator family for stealing the spirit of his family’s food by smelling. The poor man collected coins from all his friends present in his hat then shaking the hat full of coins. At the end the judge ruled to the poor man favor and the rich man is forced to depart with no other payment.
The treatment of the authority “judge” between the poor and rich is equal. The judge favors the poor man while the rich man was forced to depart. The rich man was selfish and doesn’t want to socialize with the poor people and he only cares about his money and wealth while the poor family enjoyed their life. This story implies the issue between the upper and lower class in the society. According to my reference, the author “Carlos Bulosan” experienced social discrimination when he was in the U.S. Therefore I conclude that maybe the reason why he wrote the story maybe because he wants to reveal the reality about this issue. Reading this story I remembered one quotation that can apply in this story this quotation is;
“Happy people will live their life longer”
