Having a paradigm of a feminist’s point of view on the story about the five best friends namely: Jo, Mina, Lydia, Letty and Teeny who made their plans after graduating high school. It was very interesting and exciting what could be the future of the five ladies after graduating in high school. Getting along in the story, the dreams and plans of a woman was being viewed.
Let us start with Mina, who was the leader of the group. She was intelligent and at the same time she has a beautiful face. Unfortunately she was not able to continue her studies and decided to get married a man that she met overseas. The good thing about it was they had a good life as a married couple and had a baby.
Lydia was said as the oldest among the five girls. Instead of entering college she decided to marry her boyfriend. Unfortunately their relationship did not work out right that caused them to be separated. Until later on she decided to join a convent and became a postulant. Her closed friends except Teeny, witnessed it as she became a nun.
On the other hand Teeny who was shy and timid wanted to be a painter but she decided to be a teacher. Being a teacher was not her interest, her parents told her that if she will pursue on being an artist it would not do anything good on her. But she made herself busy on her studies even though she did not like it, that made her more sick. Lydia always includes Teeny on her prayers, because she knows her situation. Teeny did not enjoy her college life, unexpectedly she died.
The most popular on their circle of friends, Letty, who focused on her singing career after graduating high school. Her parents had no money, to send her in college but she was very lucky of the talent scouts who believed in her talent. She also had a colorful love story. She had a romantic relationship with a man and proposed to her but she refused it. She decided to study music in Italy and there she met an Italian and they got married. But the man who proposed to her was still looking for her and watching her as she reached her stardom.
Lastly, was Jo, who was the biggest and they consider as the “mother” of the group. She took medicine where she could help other people. She was a career-oriented woman that there was no information regarding her love life. After taking up medicine she put up a small clinic and managed to assure the health of the people at their place.
After having a bird’s eye view on their lives we could still see their connections even though they are far from each other. We could really see the possible thing that could happen in a life of a woman. I was pitiful on what happened to the life of Teeny that she left this world not enjoying her life and was not able to fulfill her dreams. She did not even have the courage to stand on what she wanted. On the other hand I was looking for something more about the life of Jo, who was said to be the narrator of the story. She seemed to be mysterious on the story. We could also see how they give more emphasis on their future, that as a woman of their generation they are really looking forward on their career. But on their process they also experienced difficulties but still they faced it, accepted it and solved it and moved on to the next level of their life.
